Watch the absolutely AMAZING R+D at Nike: via Nike is opening an exhibition in Milan | Dazed

The process of additive manufacturing is evolving very quickly and it won’t be long before the everyday consumer really feels the impact. For the moment, the novelty lends itself well to the luxury market, whether it’s a printed CAR, HOUSE or more modestly, the customizable Prada shoe! Clients can soon choose not only heels and other modifications on certain styles but have their own initials engraved on the heel. Couture, 21st century style.

Working in a particularly unusual void between sculpture and millinery, Maiko Takeda explores new volumes and innovative, spontaneous spins on everyday inspirations.
With a BA honours in jewellry from St. Martins and a masters in millinery from the Royal College of Art, she has also worked with the phenomenal Stephen Jones, Phillip Treacy, Erickson Beamon and Issey Miyake no less. It certainly shows.

Collaborative Plexi bags

Collaborative Plexi bags

I’ve always been one for all things entomology, or rather, Ethnoentomology (the study of the relationship between insects and people). So it’s natural that this new collaboration between Damien Hirst and Prada should catch my eye. With only 20 bags made, they are in tandem with Hirst’s first exhibit in Qatar called, “RELICS”. Most beasties are encased while others are encrusted with gems on the outside. Not for the squeamish…

Great still life film for Hermes…

With the race on for wearable technologies such as smartwatches by Apple and Samsung, Google is forging ahead with it’s glasses that incorporate augmented reality, straight out of William Gibson’s novel, “Virtual Light” from 1993.
Here you can have a sneak preview what this will look like…

Google Glass “Explorer” will retail for approx. US$1,500 and will go to market in 2014.

Working between Europe and Brazil, Andreia Chaves is a design consultant for several international companies. A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Andreia Chaves’ work captured the attention of international media even before her graduation from Polimoda Fashion Institute in Florence, Italy in 2010 with her invisible shoe. That is not a surprise.

Rain Shield is a Red Dot award winner designed by Lin Min-Wei and Liu Li-Hsiang, two taiwanese students with vision and ingenuity. Using a flat, portable pop-up tent structure, it miraculously emerges in an instant and has none of the usual archaic components and can be redirected towards fending off driving wind and rain. The first of a series into the world’s best artisanal workshops to catch a glimpse of the elaborate craftsmanship that continues to evolve unabated by mass production methods and robotics. Visual poetry.

In what has to be the ultimate in “MINIMALIST” footwear, these little numbers promise just that. In fact, “Freeheel Running pads” are designed and produced in Bavaria and won the ISPO 2012 product award. Supposedly improving lower muscle and coordination, it is essentially heeless, and keeps water and gravel out. Like most shoes, no? One size fits all with adjustable straps too. Interesting but…the idea of running barefoot through mud, ice and straw as displayed on the site is one stride too far, at least for me. What is next, toe pads? We’ll see….

Nominated for the 2012 Mulberry Accessory Award, these exoskeleton inspired- 3D Printed shoes by footwear designer Janina Alleyne are in a class all their own. Drawn from the intricate structure and silhouette of external skeletons of marine invertebrates, creatures and insects, the designs also expands the full capacity of 3D printing to incorporate the elaborate design and fluid architecture flawlessly in a neo Art Nouveau way.

On the heels (excuse the pun) of the barefoot trend such as Vibrams 5-fingers shoes come the Swiss Protection sock developed with Kevlar (of bullet proof vest origins) and laminated with PVC for further protection. Not for everyone but possibly the solution for a variety of water sports and such. Running on tacks and glass is probably not recommended.
It brings new meaning to casual and “socks with sandals” notoriety and may become as annoying as the ubiquitous Croc but comfort is obviously the new black. Enjoy.

From the quirky minds of Japan, the latest sensory sensation, the eco-energy saving “Hokkyoku Monogatari” turquoise gel that sets on the skin and can be molded into chunky bracelet or necklace…or try Ice Spark that is sprayed n’spread over the skin, decreasing the temperature to freezing and sounding just like crackle pops!

Setsuden trend

Like a scene directly out of “Dark Knight” comes the BodyGuard glove. It has a stun gun in the hand, video recorder and features like GPS, radio communications, live video transmitter/receiver, biometric readers, automated license plate readers, chemical sensors.
Where do I buy one?…

ASUS' Waveface on display at CES 2010

ASUS – once known mostly as a motherboard manufacturer – has chosen CES 2010 to introduce some innovative laptops and futuristic concepts. Not content with showcasing a laptop designed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen’s chief designer, it has also introduced three Waveface design concepts. The range includes a portable device worn on the wrist, a widescreen display that is both an entertainment center and internet portal and a touch-sensitive machine that can be used as a single-screen tablet or conventional keyboard – all designed by ASUS to allow the user to fully embrace the digital life…perhaps even by using one’s own physiological and emotional state as a source of data. Well, I did say “futuristic concepts”.
