Using material ecology (the fusion of science, design and biology) to produce materials of collogen fibres emulating bone, muscle and hair in various opacities. Molded precisely to Bjork’s head, it moves in perfect syncronicity.

The Future Laboratory’s creative team has produced a film for LS:N Global’s Spring/Summer 2015 Trend Briefing, which was held at South Bank on 12 March.
The video introduces The Optimised Self, our manifesto for the body and mind; Whole-system Thinking, consumerism that goes beyond sustainability and environmentalism; and The Immortal Brand, a new premise for businesses that want to thrive in The Age of the Long Near.
‘We wanted to establish the premise of The Age of the Long Near through a commanding spoken narrative,’ says Lynne Devine, who provided design and direction on the film. ‘The film traces the path of an orb as it evolves, regenerates and mutates before returning to a singularity, suggesting an infinite cycle of time with an element of the divine.’

As the year begins, there are two developments worth noting that will have profound repercussions down the road:
The Stanford school of medicine have developed a technique to lengthen the ‘telomeres’ which are the end caps to our DNA and serve to protect and divide the cells. As we age, the number diminishes and weakens from an optimum range of 8,000 to 10,000 nucleotides that make up the average youth. This process extends the telomeres by a 1,000 nucleotides or the equivalent of numerous human years. This may prove disruptive in the treatment of numerous diseases and possibly in rejuvenating cells as a way to slow down the aging process. Graphene has been introduced to various industries but this particular application from the crew at the University of Manchester and of Sheffield will allow LED light to be emitted over a surface of only a few molecular layers thick, thus allowing for a new generation of FLEXIBLE and semi-transparent electronic screens. This is due to the heterostructure of the material, its superb conductivity and strength, incredibly at only 10-40 atoms thick!
Northwestern University in Chicago has announced results in electric brain treatment that may hold the key to rehabilitating memory disorders stemming from alzheimer’s, aging, brain injury, schizophrenia, stroke and just plain ole’ forgetfulness…Results showed substantial improvement of memory tests after the 3rd day of 20 minute cranial massages for 5 consecutive days using electric impulses to a sweetspot strongly connected to the hippocampus just under the skull. Cramming for exams just got a whole lot easier (lol).

Stimulating a particular region in the brain via non-invasive delivery of electrical current using magnetic pulses, called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, improves memory, reports a new Northwestern Medicine® study published in the journal Science.
Scientists from MIT have developed new materials as light as aerogel only 10,000 times harder and may soon revolutionize chassis for automobiles, aerospace and other tech industries. Its secret lies in the structure at a molecular level that is 3D printed using a method called,micro-stereolithography that form lattice structures that withstand much more than their porous structure. 160.000 times more to be precise. A highly innovative design from Deniz Karasahin, Paris won the 2014 A’Design contest for a medical brace. It is not only custom 3-D printed to each patient but because of the material, is waterproof, lightweight, environmentally sound and bacteria-resistant. There are ultrasound probes on the interior that directly touch the skin so regular low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) will stimulate bone reconstruction. Quote: “For single 20 minute daily sessions this system promises to reduce the healing process up to 38% and increase the heal rate up to 80% in non-union fractures”. The structure also allows maximum breathability, reducing infections and itchiness. Impressive.
Taking a rather novel approach to drones, this prototype for a new breed of tiny flying robots could hail a new chapter in stealth use that mimic the insect world. These “MAVs” (micro aerial vehicles) have been difficult to control and are weighed down but New York University has developed one that is featherweight and remains stable due to its petal propulsion which is a cross between a jellyfish and moth and is not much bigger than a dime! Would make a great art installation with a few dozen too….
Taking height to the absolute limit, Seoul is proceeding with the 450m infinity tower, the world’s first “invisible” tower. Designed by GDS architects, it will feature various cutting edge Korean technology such as 18 weatherproof optical cameras that will generate an invisible viewpoint for pedestrians and an elaborate LED System for flashing away birds or appearing to passing planes as it will be situated near the Incheon airport. Emissions of low frequency will also do the same job. The facade will be made of 28m triangular structures.it will feature open air sections to relieve wind resistance and other treats include photovoltaic cells, a wind turbine and geothermal energy. Not bad!

Coming to Europe and Russia later this year, the new Philips DesignLine 2013 TV comes in 46- and 55-inch screen sizes, has a LCD display sitting behind the front glass sheet with active 3D technology for Full HD 3D, wifi and smart capabilities. It also sits casually on the floor, floating above the ground in a sleek display with ambient background light for added mood. No price has been disclosed yet, however…
With the race on for wearable technologies such as smartwatches by Apple and Samsung, Google is forging ahead with it’s glasses that incorporate augmented reality, straight out of William Gibson’s novel, “Virtual Light” from 1993.

British Columbia-based Hyperstealth Biotechnology claims to be working on an extraordinary “invisibility cloak” that would render its wearer virtually invisible. Citing security concerns, the camouflage-design company has yet to provide anything beyond mock-ups of the Quantum Stealth cloak, but explained that the fabric works by bending light around a person, enabling them to disappear into the environment. While the technology may seem fantastic, the company insists that they have the backing of the U.S. Pentagon and the Canadian military. Watch for it.

That is not a surprise.
