A new robotic mannequin has been developed by a professor at the Hong Kong Polytecnic University of textile and clothing. It transforms according to exact measurements entered digitally, resulting in a myriad of body shapes. Perfect for personally tailoring, couture dressmaking, schools and quality control.

A highly innovative design from Deniz Karasahin, Paris won the 2014 A’Design contest for a medical brace. It is not only custom 3-D printed to each patient but because of the material, is waterproof, lightweight, environmentally sound and bacteria-resistant. There are ultrasound probes on the interior that directly touch the skin so regular low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) will stimulate bone reconstruction. Quote: “For single 20 minute daily sessions this system promises to reduce the healing process up to 38% and increase the heal rate up to 80% in non-union fractures”. The structure also allows maximum breathability, reducing infections and itchiness. Impressive.

This sleek monster by Spike Aerospace is an 18 passenger supersonic business jet that will glide along at 1100mph (Mach 1.6). This will halve the current times between points like NYC to London in 3 hours. The streamlining is aided by the omition of windows. Yes, windows. In it’s place, the walls will act as video monitors of the outside in real time and can dim on demand. Sweet.

I’ve always had a soft spot for dutch design like the group Drood. This work by Alex de Witte reinforces that affection. Having studied at the Artemis Academy, his approach diverges the process in turn creating something unique and innovative yet very ‘light-hearted’.

Taking a rather novel approach to drones, this prototype for a new breed of tiny flying robots could hail a new chapter in stealth use that mimic the insect world. These “MAVs” (micro aerial vehicles) have been difficult to control and are weighed down but New York University has developed one that is featherweight and remains stable due to its petal propulsion which is a cross between a jellyfish and moth and is not much bigger than a dime! Would make a great art installation with a few dozen too….

With the race on for wearable technologies such as smartwatches by Apple and Samsung, Google is forging ahead with it’s glasses that incorporate augmented reality, straight out of William Gibson’s novel, “Virtual Light” from 1993.

British Columbia-based Hyperstealth Biotechnology claims to be working on an extraordinary “invisibility cloak” that would render its wearer virtually invisible. Citing security concerns, the camouflage-design company has yet to provide anything beyond mock-ups of the Quantum Stealth cloak, but explained that the fabric works by bending light around a person, enabling them to disappear into the environment. While the technology may seem fantastic, the company insists that they have the backing of the U.S. Pentagon and the Canadian military. Watch for it.

Suspended from branches or on legs, it takes camping to a different level, literally.
It is 3m (9.84 ft) in diameter, weighs 120 kg (264 pounds), and features analuminum frame covered with waterproofed white tarpaulin and mosquito net windows. Lugging it to that beachside oasis might prove a little daunting but well worth it, although the price tag might also be a hindrance at 8000$…

Professor Andrew Mills and Dr Michael McFarlane, from the University of Stratchclyde, Scotland has come up with an ingenious invention with this colourful paper bracelet that changes from yellow to pink when UV rays have reached safe limits. The acid in the paper degrades and changes colour. There is a range of bands depending on skin tones and their limits. Swedish-based Intellego Technology is commercializing it with a launch for spring 2013. The simplest ideas are often the best, after all.

Milan’s architectural firm, Santambrogiomilano, has come up with a new line aptly named, Simplicity. It is a collaboration between founder Carlo Santambrogio and designer Ennio Arosio that features iconic furniture pieces, beds, sofas and bookcases, all encased within an amazing concept home complet with architectural elements such as staircases and kitchens, all executed in ‘extraclear’ glass. As the briefing states:
‘SIMPLICITY is realized in extraclear glass by Saint Gobain, tempered and stratified, named Diamant for its
characteristics of extreme purity and brilliancy. It is interpreted in a unique way with the use of important
thicknesses (30 mm) and treated with special technical procedures to guarantee total security.’

As space becomes an ever diminishing resource in our cities, multi-functional and transformative furniture becomes of upmost importance. Enter the “Klapptischbank Up Up Up” which provides an all-in-one dining solution that makes it easy to store or take in transport to the outdoors. This fold-away model, when opened out, sits 70 cm (28 inches) wide, 130 cm (51 in) deep, and 75 cm (30 in) high. When closed it’s just as wide and its height increases to 125 cm (49 in), but it’s only 25 cm (10 in) deep! Hallelujah!

Google has sold interactive glasses for $1500 (only) during its annual software conference in San Francisco to first adaptors. If all goes well, a less expensive version of the glasses is expected to go on sale for consumers in early 2014. While wearing these glasses, directions to a destination or a text message from a friend may appear directly before your eyes. Conversing with friends in a video chat, take a photo without taking out a camera, phone or even buy a few things online as you walk around. JUST DON’T DRIVE DOING IT.
